Kyriakos | Memory 47
47. Traveling to the capital for the very first time ☀ (Neutral Negative)
She's barely fifteen, and the spring season is coming. She's been staying with the hunter since . . . and while she's appreciative of everything he and his wife had done for her, she feels as though she cannot keep imposing upon them. She thanks them as politely and earnestly she can, and . . . returns to what remains of her village, first.
There's nothing left. Some of the buildings still stand, the ones who avoided some of the damage the fire that rushed through there, but even then nature has already began her claim upon the space.
When she finds her house, with the intent of gathering any of her belongings, there's . . . nothing to gather. No books survived, no clothes, not even any of her father's or mother's things are there. Upon leaving, she stops to attempt a prayer, but . . . finds that she can't do it. How can she put them to rest under spirits who didn't bother coming to their rescue?
When she leaves, the makes for the road she knows is about half a day's walk from there. If she remembered right, it lead all the way to the capital, and was the closest place she could think of to go. She'd . . . need money, certainly, but maybe she could find work there. She was a healer in training, she had other skills that were useful, surely someone could use her.
The entire trip takes about three days; and with each step she gets closer, the more and more she fears actually arriving. She'd never been there before, and she knew her kind wasn't welcome. Would she blend in? Would they spot her right away and kill her? That thought is very, very briefly welcome, but she immediately dismisses it.
When she arrives, finally, it takes her almost all day to convince herself to walk through the gates.
What she learned:
- wait who is the hunter and his wife? She was staying with them?
- the village was completely destroyed
- the traditional prayer for laying someone to rest but lol she didn't do it
- where her village is, and how to get to the capital from there
- she tried so hard to be optimistic and got so far, but in the end she realized how pointless it was
