46. Getting betrothed :/ ☀ (Neutral Trivial)
While it isn't odd for Eir and his parents to come over for dinner, tonight's different. Aurae is forced into something a little nicer than the usual clothes she wears, and her mother made her help clean the house top to bottom. Even her father, who usually finds an excuse to get out of cleaning helped out, and has pulled out his best robes for the night. Aurae has no idea why, but after a brief flash of her mother's temper (it's no surprise where she gets it from) she decided it was better to listen.
So Eir's family comes over, and they sit down for dinner! Aurae's mom went all out, cooking all sorts of things. Eir and Aurae have known each other since they were little, so they sit together at the end of the table chattering away as the parents discuss whatever it is they want to talk about.
But apparently they were supposed to be listening or something because Eir's mom addressesher and she has no idea what she asked. Aurae's mom repeats it - how would you like to grow up and marry Eir? - and Aurae just. Stares.
Eir, who is a little older than Aurae, turns bright red.
Aurae's father is trying not to laugh, and her mom elbows him before elaborating - that she is now betrothed to Eir and that when they're of age and done with their apprenticeships they'll be married.
Aurae is entirely unimpressed and entirely uninterested and - being herself - tells them that she doesn't care and that she isn't interested in getting married. She wants to be a healer and that's all she really cares about.
Her father starts laughing - and Eir's father joins in, but the mothers are shocked. Eir even snickers, even if he turns a little redder. The dinner proceeds as though the conversation never happened, and when Eir and his family leave Aurae is sent to her room for the night. :/
What she learned:
- she's about 11 in this memory - just about to turn 12, but before she becomes the healer's apprentice
- her mother takes betrothal very, very seriously (as it's an elvish tradition)
- she could care less even at that age
- she got punished for not caring :/ :/
