Kyriakos | Memory 31

31. The squire ☀ (Neutral Neutral)

Aurae has been in the capital a few weeks at this point; scavenging what she can, learning how to pickpocket, and whatnot. As she's nearing the merchant quarter, however, in search of a merchant who will perhaps allow her to work for him for the day, she comes across a group of thieves - teenagers, but older and bigger than her.

She tries to ignore them as they cat call at her, but they don't take very kindly to being ignored and they follow her until she ducks into an alley - which is a mistake, because it's a dead end. They're insulting her now, hey little elf it's rude to do this and that, you should show more respect, and one of them grabs her despite her stuttered apologies and the beginning of tears.

And then the hand on her arm is suddenly . . . just a hand, for all of a second, and the man grabbing her is yelling in pain. She ducks behind a barrel immediately as another man - no older than the others there, but dressed in nicer clothes and wearing a symbol on his arm that marks him as a knight. He yells at the group to leave her alone lest they wish to lose more than a hand, and they quickly make their escape.

Once they're gone, he turns to where Aurae is hiding and offers her a hand and a smile after he sheathes his sword. He tells her that his name is Aelemar, and that he's a squire from the knights, and that he's sorry he didn't stop what was happening sooner.

Aurae shyly introduces herself and takes her hand, and Aelemar goes on to say that he'll treat her to lunch.

She accepts, and she ends up spending most of the day with him. She also ends up explaining what happened to her family (after he asked) though not in any detail beyond what she can spare. He asks her where she's staying now, and she has no answer that isn't . . . y'know, the streets. Aelemar offers her his roommate's bed instead; he's gone home to visit, but he doubts he'll be coming back. She asks him if it's okay, since she isn't a knight and is she even allowed near there? He just laughs and says it'll be fine, and he'll clear it with the knight he squires for. He seems so genuine and nice that she takes him up on his offer, and for the first time since she left the forest she had a (somewhat) good night's sleep that night.

What she learned:
- She already knew she was pickpocketing but she was actually living on the streets, too
- And apparently too scared to stand up for herself, despite all the bravado she used to show back in her village
- Aelemar came to her rescue despite not knowing her; exactly what she'd think a knight would do
- He's actually really nice
- Way too nice what the heck
- And he was sincere ;;
- tl;dr suddenly a lot of good after months of nothing but bad
