Kyriakos | Memory 24
Returning to an oddly quiet capital ★ (Neutral Neutral)
Warning for thoughts of suicide.
This takes place almost right after her revival. How do you know? Because there is pain when you put this shard in, a lingering, sharp pain throughout her hands and chest, right where certain scars are.
But for the tl;dr: the capital is as quiet as she's ever seen it. The mercenaries and bandits who once owned the streets for the most part are practically gone, replaced with women and their children taking their time with shopping, playing - things you'd never see in this part of the capital, especially during campaigns. And speaking of those - the crowd that normally took up that area? Gone. And not a single person giving them out, either.
She checks into the tavern she usually stays out and finds the innkeeper gone - up north to take care of business, she's told, but she's more than welcome to stay there anyway, as per usual. She's relieved, because all she has is the clothes on her back and her sword, thanks to dying and leaving the rest of her belongings behind. She does have some money stashed away in the room, and she takes it out to go the stores to replace what she's lost - a traveling bag, something to sharpen her sword, bandages and herbs to tend to her wounds - but she's unsettled by how . . . empty everything seems.
While she's out, she's approached by a captain of the knights - odd, to see someone like that in this area of the capital, but. He addresses her by name and, when she starts to dismiss him, explains that he isn't here to arrest her, but to hire her.
He goes on to explain that a war has begun with the Drow of the north, and by the King's orders, every able-bodied man and woman (should they choose) is to head north with the knights. It was as abrupt as it seems - suddenly, an attack from nowhere, a village destroyed completely and innocent lives lost. It was the first time in years that the King had given any orders at all, which only cemented how serious this was.
Tempest tells the captain that she's unable to join the knights due to her . . . career, but he assures her that isn't an issue. In fact, he wants to hire her for something a little different - a group put together of only the best mercenaries he and the other captains can find, to sneak into the Drow's territory and take them down from the inside. He goes on to say that she would be compensated for it, generously at that, and should she accept then the last carriage to the town they're to meet in leaves tomorrow morning.
It's . . . tempting. Not for the money, but for the action, the opportunity to take all of her aggression out on foul creatures like the Drow. Or the chance to die like she's meant to. But when she does accept, she tells him it's just for the money, and that she will leave if she feels like it. She also lets slip that maybe, just maybe, she will actually find her end here.
The captain doesn't seem bothered by it - like he's heard it before. But he thanks her again and bows, giving her a sealed letter with instructions about where to go, etc. Tempest nods and watches him leave . . . then leans against the building nearby and sighs.
Her last thought is that she wanted to escape this, and now she's being dragged back in. And that maybe it's punishment.
What she learned:
- She is in a lot of pain. This actually takes place less than two weeks after her revival, so she's still healing from it. As she walks around she has to stop and rest, etc.
- This is the beginning of the war that's been mentioned in a few of her more recent memories
- The capital is empty because everyone has traveled up north for said war
- It's serious, if the captains are going around recruiting mercenaries for their skill
- They know her by name; she's never been arrested, to her knowledge, but her reputation has spread that much. She's wary because it means someone on That Side knows of her
- An explanation of how the war started, the King giving orders, etc.
- The first, first thought that she doesn't want this life (being a mercenary) anymore
An important note in this memory, though, is that it's the first where she acknowledges that Tempest no longer has a purpose. Tempest was created solely to kill Maias and that's been done - so what now? She wasn't supposed to survive, and that was her intention for a very long time. And yet, here she is. She is super lost on where to go next, and this seems like the only option. And she wants to die in battle, but she also thinks that the spirits are punishing her for the crimes she's committed, and that's why she won't be granted the one thing she wants most in the world: her death.
