Kyriakos | Memory 19
19. The broach ★ (Significant Neutral)
They're well into the north by now - it's covered in snow, Tempest is miserable, the group has already learned of her terrible temper, etc. They stop for the night in a cave at the base of the mountains, and the group sets up fires and whatnot to keep everything warm. Most people settle in for the night, but Tempest heads for the entrance of the cave instead, under the excuse that she'd be lookout first. But really, it's because she doesn't sleep well, and the weather is bothering her.
Zahar soon joins her, and she greets him as "uncle" (which, from how it feels, is a somewhat new thing, but a good thing). He says that he couldn't sleep himself, and that he thought she'd like some company - which she's more than fine with, oddly enough. So they talk about nothing in particular - the path they have to take to the side of the mountain, that there's a village right before they hit that and that if they move quickly they may make it by sundown, things like that.
Soon the conversation quiets, but it's a comfortable silence. Tempest, at one point, pushes her hood back - her hair's the longest its been in this memory, and she tries to pull it back but it keeps getting in her face. She makes an off-hand comment about being so used to it being short that she should just cut it again the next time they stop.
Zahar laughs, but tells her that her mother used to be the same way. She asks him to explain, and he tells her a story about when her mother cut all of her hair off, because she didn't like it, and how infuriated her grandmother got, and apparently her mother was a bit of a tomboy when she was younger - which Tempest finds very hard to believe, as she remembers her mother being nothing more than a proper elven woman. Zahar just shakes his head when she says as much, and tells her that there are many things she probably doesn't know about her mother - and that it's his job, as her younger brother, to regale those tales to her daughter. It's a little bittersweet for both of them, but it doesn't hurt like it does in the memory where she first met him. She even laughs at how mischievous her uncle looks at one point.
Zahar goes on to tell Tempest that she looks just like her mother when she isn't hiding under that hood, and that she should let her hair grow, because she would be just as beautiful. Tempest, ever graceful at taking compliments, just huffs and tells him he's ridiculous.
He then reaches into his cloak and pulls out a broach - the kind used as decoration, that one could wear either to hold a cloak closed or just because. It's nothing overly fancy - it's obviously elven made judging by the design, but surprisingly simple, too. He tells her that it was her mother's, and that he carries it around with him as a good luck charm - but that she should have it, and keep it as her good luck charm instead. It was something that her mother once cherished.
Tempest, blown away by the gesture and at a loss for words, does something she hasn't done in a very, very long time - she reaches out to hug Zahar and thank him, almost in tears. She promises she'll take good care of it, once she's able to speak again.
What she learned:
- It's at least a few months after the memory where she meets her uncle and cousin, since her hair is much longer than it is in that memory.
- FUCK THE COLD FUCK THE NORTH FUCK THE SNOW FUCK IT
- She's in . . . a surprising amount of pain, from the weather, though it's mostly in her hands and back. Y'know, where the worst of her scarring is.
- She calls Zahar "uncle" which is SOMETHING HUGE since she hasn't really thought of him as one until now
- They must've grown really close, since they're sharing stories about her mother
- She looks more like her mother apparently??
- Oh that's the broach she has sitting in her room
- The one she came here with
- It belongs to her mother
- . . . SHE HAS SOMETHING OF HER MOTHER'S
