The first time she killed someone ★ (Significant Negative)
This memory takes place a month or two after this. It's important to note that while she's been "Tempest" this entire time, it still doesn't fit right. Her impulse is to give her name as Aurae, to be far more friendly than she forces herself to be, and so forth. It's pretty much like two personalities warring for control.
Also, while this is a neg sig, it doesn't have THAT big of an impact this far into her getting her memories back. But it sure does bring up some Important Things about her as a person that at this point, she's kind of not okay with and contradict some of what she's said until now.
So in this, she's working one of her first jobs as a mercenary. She's been placed with a group of men tasked to kill a man their employer has deemed a "threat" - and that's all the information they're given. Not if he really IS a threat or not, what he's done to be considered a threat, nothing. Tempest isn't very comfortable with the thought of killing a man without knowing why, but she doesn't complain. She won't be involved with the killing part anyway.
While the group is a little put off by working with such a young mercenary, and a young woman at that, they do set her up as the lookout - which is incredibly important, as they're right on the border between districts and the last thing they want are the knights coming to break things up. That, and she was hired for her magic, so it would come in handy.
However, their target knew he was going to be attacked that night. While the men snuck into his home, he came around to summon his men and take out the lookout.
He surprises Tempest, and unprepared she takes a few hits before she gathers her wits about her. She's only armed with a dagger, but she's small and she's quick, and after knocking the man to his knees jumps on his back and - having no other option, lest he kill her - slits his throat.
When her group comes to find out what all the noise is about, they're thrilled that their "little mage" showed her worth and then some. It earns her a lot of respect from all of them that will benefit her down the line, although obviously at this point she doesn't know that yet.
She earns her pay (and some extra, even the employer was impressed) and uses it to buy a room for the night. After cleaning up and tending to her wounds (and notably NOT healing them, this is where it starts), she goes to bed - and ends up falling asleep in the middle of begging her parents' forgiveness, because she sure did just go against everything they raised her on. BABY'S FIRST MURDER.
What she learned:
- She's still adjusting to "Tempest". There's a few times in the memory where someone has to call her name twice, or shake her shoulder to get her attention.
- The very beginning of who Tempest was intended to be: quiet, aloof, and so forth. Which kind of stuck, although there's also the impression that she had been trying out other things, too.
- SURE IS NOT OKAY WITH KILLING DUDES
- . . . SURE DID KILL A DUDE
- She's REALLY UPSET BY IT too
- At the very end she's essentially reciting a prayer to the spirits asking them for the chance to beg her parents' forgiveness.
- There's a lot of guilt that comes from this memory - guilt that she carries to this day, because it was the very first time she really took that first step away from who Aurae was, essentially betrayed her parents (in her mind), and sealed her fate as Tempest.
