Kyriakos | Memory 14
14. Discovering the ring of dark magic, putting it on, and having to cut her finger off to remove it before it killed her. ★ (Neutral Negative)
So this memory starts off with Tempest and a group of other men wandering through an abandoned village. The men decide that, since they were on the way to find treasure anyway, that they should search the village for anything else they can bring back to the guy who hired them.
Tempest takes that opportunity to go off by herself, and heads for one of the smaller shacks to kill time. She isn't really looking like the others, but the building she ends up in has a basement, and she goes down to explore.
It must've been a shop run by a wizard or mage, because there's magical artifacts all over - though of note, she can't sense what sort of magic it is. But there's a lot of it - as well as potion jars, dried out herbs for potions, and so on and so forth.
While she's going through everything, though, she finds a ring! It's gold with a large gem embedded in it, and Tempest figures that she may as well take it with her to see if she can get anything for it - a girl's gotta eat, after all. But curiosity gets the better of her, and she slides it onto her right ring finger.
Almost immediately, intense, mind-numbing pain starts shooting through her body and the ring tightens on her finger. She tries to pull it off, but whatever magic was in the ring is quickly killing her.
There's no one around to help her, and either she dies or does something, so - she pulls out her dagger and cuts her finger off.
Turns out, the ring was filled with dark magic, which just so happens to be poison and deadly to half-elves.
Once she's recovered, Tempest picks up her finger - ring still on it - and puts it in a pouch, then into her cloak. Her last thought before the memory ends is that she's going to demand more pay for almost dying.
What she learned:
- Treasure hunting! Apparently she gets hired for those, too.
- She isn't greedy; she's more focused on earning enough coin to find an inn or a meal than gaining any wealth.
- Her curiosity is sometimes really, really bad.
- DARK MAGIC IS FUCKIN PAINFUL AND POISONOUS.
- ............ so that's why she's missing a finger.
